VOICE: We began learning our National Anthem this week. Students were introduced to "The Star Spangled Banner" by learning a little about the battle at Fort McHenry and the poem written by Francis Scott Key. Then we used a book to help us go through the words to understand what they mean.
NOTATION: We continued writing and clapping our rhythm patterns. INSTRUMENTS: We traveled to Africa this week for our featured instruments: djembe, shekere, konga, gathering drum, and talking drum (pictured above). Students tried all of them as they played along to African music on the stereo. MOVEMENT: Students learned the South African dance "Tant Hessie" (pictured above).

CONCEPTS: Students were assessed this week on high/low and major/minor.
INSTRUMENT: Our featured instrument was the ocean drum (pictured above), and students tried it out after sitting with me for their assessment. VOICE: While I assessed, students kept busy with two projects. They drew how their faces look when they are using the correct singing voice: eyebrows up, eyes forward, mouths wide open (pictured above). For the second project, they made their own voice warm-up posters that we will use during class starting next week. We also continued working on concert music. |
