VOICE & MOVEMENT: We worked especially hard learning our latest concert song about bats. Then we practiced some of our other concert music. We also learned a short Valentine's Day song that we used to play a movement game (pictured above.)

VOICE: We started learning our next concert song while continuing to practice the others. We also continued listening to plays, musicals, and operas with relation to how the voice is used.
NOTATION: We finished up our second turns with writing rhythm patterns. INSTRUMENT: We played the gong while listening to Chinese children's songs (pictured above). MOVEMENT: We played with bean bags while listening to Chinese children's songs (pictured above). CONCEPTS: We continued listening to, practicing, and discussing dynamics. VOICE: Students continued learning the "Star Spangled Banner." We also continued using their own warm-up posters to get our voices ready for singing (pictured above).
NOTATION: We are finishing our second turns with rhythm patterns. INSTRUMENTS: Students used hand drums to practice steady beat with an activity called "Pass the Beat" (pictured above). MOVEMENT: Students moved around the room in a review activity where they determine if the genre is a play, musical, or opera based on how the voice is used. They also reviewed dynamics through movement. First Graders continued to dance to "Tant Hessie" as well. VOICE: We began learning our National Anthem this week. Students were introduced to "The Star Spangled Banner" by learning a little about the battle at Fort McHenry and the poem written by Francis Scott Key. Then we used a book to help us go through the words to understand what they mean.
NOTATION: We continued writing and clapping our rhythm patterns. INSTRUMENTS: We traveled to Africa this week for our featured instruments: djembe, shekere, konga, gathering drum, and talking drum (pictured above). Students tried all of them as they played along to African music on the stereo. MOVEMENT: Students learned the South African dance "Tant Hessie" (pictured above). CONCEPTS: Students were assessed this week on high/low and major/minor.
INSTRUMENT: Our featured instrument was the ocean drum (pictured above), and students tried it out after sitting with me for their assessment. VOICE: While I assessed, students kept busy with two projects. They drew how their faces look when they are using the correct singing voice: eyebrows up, eyes forward, mouths wide open (pictured above). For the second project, they made their own voice warm-up posters that we will use during class starting next week. We also continued working on concert music. First Graders have been working on a project during music class. As a whole class, we wrote our own holiday story. Then we decided which classroom instruments would work well as sound effects. Students chose which instrument they wanted to play, and we recorded our stories!
VOICE: We have moved on to our third concert song this week. Pictured above are students singing "Cool to Be a Worm." They love it because they say it sounds like 'fancy hotel music.'
NOTATION: Students continue copying rhythm patterns. INSTRUMENTS: We watched videos of hand bell choirs and played our classroom hand bells. Pictured above students are using step bells to practicing listening for pitches getting higher and getting lower. They were put into small groups and take turns quizzing each other. After a few turns they make it harder by closer their eyes and just listening. HOLIDAY PROJECT: We started a new project for December. Stay tuned... VOICE: We continued to practice our first concert song "Squirm," and we started to learn our next concert song "Cool to be a Worm."
NOTATION: Rhythm pattern turn number 2 continued. INSTRUMENTS: We talked about and played the maracas and castanets this week. Students had a good time using them to accompany music from Puerto Rico (pictured above). MOVEMENT: We danced to our Puerto Rican music the first music class of the week. We danced to "Turkey Woogie" during the second class of the week CONCEPTS: We have been practicing major / minor and high / low. VOICE: By the end of this week, students knew all of their first concert song "Squirm." They are already coming up with fun ideas to make our concert unique! And their voices are sounding great too!!!
NOTATION: Students continue to work on their notes. The whole note has now been introduced. We started our second turn rotating through rhythm patterns. This time around, students choose a rhythm pattern from a large selection of patterns I have already written. Then they copy it on the board while the rest of us continue with music class. By copying, they are practicing how to write their notes. They can also choose to add more notes, rests or a repeat sign to their pattern (pictured above). After they write it, they have to tell us what notes they are before we all clap it together. INSTRUMENTS: Our featured instrument this week was the violin. Students listened to orchestral violin playing (Rimsky-Korsakov "Scheherazade") and folk violin playing "fiddling." Students also got to try playing the violin (pictured above). MOVEMENT: We danced to our folk song selections and played "Charlie Over the Ocean." CONCEPTS: Ear training on major / minor and high / low. On Wednesday, November 6, six of Miss Carlson's students performed their rhythm charts at the at the School Board Meeting. They did a terrific job!!!
